Cost of Living in Welkom Compared to Other Cities
According to the latest data from Expatistan’s cost of living index, the city of Welkom ranks 12th most expensive out of 21 South African cities. With an index score of 86, Welkom sits just below Vereeniging and Pretoria and slightly above Nelspruit and Durban.
What does this mean?
For Welkom residents, this indicates that while our city is not among the most expensive in South Africa, the cost of living is still higher than in places like Bloemfontein, Soweto, or Newcastle.
Interestingly, even though some South African cities like Richards Bay and Johannesburg top the national list, our major metros (Joburg, Cape Town, Pretoria, and Durban) are still considered among the least expensive cities in the world compared to global standards.
In short: Living in Welkom is more affordable than in South Africa’s pricier hubs, but we’re still placed in the upper half of the national ranking.
